You don't have to fly far to find that holiday vibe. On the Frisian IJsselmeer coast your day is all about wind, water and being outdoors together. Workum makes a great base: plenty of room to practice, fellow kiters on the beach and a charming town to explore after your session.

At Workum, west, southwest and northwest winds are the ones to look for. East winds are offshore—don’t head out on the water solo then. Always check gusts and local advice before a session; wind direction alone doesn't make conditions safe.
Much of the water is shallow, which makes practicing easier but demands care: don't jump where you might land shallow and give lessons space. Foiling requires enough depth. Beginners should start with an instructor; independent kiters should choose conditions that suit their experience.
Wind varies day to day. That's why we don't provide fixed wind percentages or guarantees. Use current spot info and NKV wind measurements and check the forecast just before you go.

Getting there
Getting here
By car — Navigate to Kitespot Workum / the beach at It Soal, Suderséleane 29, Workum. From the N359 follow the signs to Workum and the beach. From North Holland use the Afsluitdijk; from the south come via Lemmer. Use a live route planner for traffic and detours.
Parking — Use the designated parking areas by the beach and keep access roads clear. The VVV lists free parking; check current signage. Camping Welgelegen has a different address and is not directly at this kitespot.
By public transport — Travel to Workum station and arrange the last stretch to the beach in advance, for example by bike or a prearranged lift. You don't arrive directly at the kite zone. Check current connections and possibilities to bring gear in your trip planner.
To Welgelegen — The campsite is at Lange Leane 11, 8711 HK Workum, between Workum and Hindeloopen. Use this address for arriving at the campsite and the beach address for your session.
Know before you go
Practical
Level and guidance — From beginner lessons to advanced riders: Friesland offers various options. The levels above don't mean every spot or event is suitable for everyone. Choose lessons, coaching and a spot that match your experience.
What to bring — Bring your own suitable kite gear, a wetsuit suited to the water and weather, protective gear, dry warm clothing and drinking water. Arrange rental or lessons in advance; general destination visits don't include equipment.
On the spot — Use the designated kite zone, keep the launch and landing area clear and give swimmers and lessons space. Follow signs and instructions from local managers. Rules and access can change; check the NKV spot map before you go.
After the session — In Workum you can find food, groceries and gear advice. Only overnight in permitted places and book your campsite or room separately. A KiteCrew event will list what's included.
No wind — Explore Workum or Hindeloopen, grab a bike or plan an activity with your crew. Book extra activities separately and check availability with the provider.
